Is Sports Betting Legal in Michigan? Online Betting Laws

Yes, sports betting is legal in Michigan through licensed online sportsbooks and authorized retail sportsbooks. Online bettors must be at least 21 and physically within Michigan. Detroit's commercial casino sportsbooks also require customers to be 21; tribal retail venues can have different age rules.
Michigan allows betting on approved college sports, including eligible games involving Michigan teams. Individual wagers still have to comply with the state's sports wagering catalogue. This guide explains the licensing, location and college rules, with links to the official checks. For casino gaming, poker and other products, start with our Michigan gambling laws guide.
Michigan sports betting rules at a glance
| Question | Michigan rule |
|---|---|
| Online and mobile sportsbooks | Legal through operators and platform providers authorized by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, or MGCB. |
| Location for online bets | You must be physically within Michigan when placing a Michigan wager. Residency is a separate question. |
| Minimum age | 21 online and at Detroit commercial casino sportsbooks. Check the individual tribal retail venue. |
| Michigan college teams | Eligible games can be offered. There is no general exclusion of a team because it is based in Michigan. |
| College player props | Subject to the approved league, event and wager rules. Permission is not unlimited. |
| High school sports | Not permitted under the MGCB's sports betting guidance. |
The MGCB's current operator register identifies the lawful online channels. Its sports wagering catalogue sets out event and bet-type approvals, while individual sportsbook rules determine what the operator actually offers.
Is online sports betting legal in Michigan?
Yes, online sports betting is legal in Michigan through state-authorized sportsbooks. You must satisfy the account checks and be in the state when wagering. An account opened in Michigan does not give you permission to keep placing Michigan wagers after crossing the border.
Michigan residence is not the same as physical presence. A visitor can satisfy the location requirement while in Michigan, subject to the operator's identity checks and other eligibility terms. A Michigan resident who is outside the state cannot rely on their home address instead of a verified location.
Find the sports betting product in the MGCB register.
Use your own account and complete identity checks.
The platform must verify your location when you wager.
These checks apply to the wager, not merely to downloading an app. A website accepting a Michigan address or payment method is not evidence that it holds Michigan authorization. Use the regulator's list before depositing money.
Which sportsbooks are licensed in Michigan?
The MGCB's authorized online gaming and sports betting register separates casino links from sports betting links. On 11 October 2026, its sports betting entries covered these 13 brands:
- bet365
- BetMGM
- betPARX / Play Gun Lake
- BetRivers
- Caesars Sportsbook
- DraftKings
- Eagle Casino & Sports
- Fanatics Sportsbook
- FanDuel
- FireKeepers
- Four Winds
- Hard Rock Bet
- theScore Bet
This is a dated register check, not an operator ranking or a promise that every product is available to every customer. Follow the current register because brands, websites and platform arrangements can change.
The legal casino operator, technology provider and customer-facing brand may have different names. Check the row and the sports betting link together. A brand appearing only in the casino column is not thereby authorized to offer a sportsbook. The same distinction matters when an older guide describes a brand that has since changed.
Age rules and retail sportsbooks
Michigan's sports betting age is 21 for online betting and the three Detroit commercial casinos. Retail betting at a tribal casino follows the particular venue's rules and tribal framework, so a statewide claim that every sportsbook is 21-plus would be inaccurate.
For example, Soaring Eagle's published retail sportsbook house rules prohibit wagers by people under 18. Saganing Eagles Landing's current FAQ likewise sets an 18-plus requirement for wagering and requires valid identification. Check the sportsbook directly before visiting, including any access restrictions that apply to the surrounding venue.
A tribal retail policy does not change the state's online age requirement. An 18-year-old admitted to a particular tribal sportsbook cannot use that venue's age policy to open a Michigan online sportsbook account.
Jurisdiction also affects complaints. The MGCB regulates Detroit's commercial casinos and state-authorized internet sports betting. Tribal gaming operates under federal law, tribal regulation and state compacts; the MGCB has compact oversight responsibilities, but it is not the ordinary regulator of every tribal retail dispute. Start with the particular casino's complaint process for an on-site wager.
College sports and player props
Yes, you can bet on college sports in Michigan, including approved games involving the University of Michigan or Michigan State. The current MGCB catalogue includes NCAA football and basketball. It does not exclude a team simply because it is based in the state.
The catalogue's general rule limits NCAA betting to Division I events unless another level is specifically authorized. Approval of a sport or league does not automatically approve every novelty, proposition or live bet.
| Proposed wager | What to check |
|---|---|
| Michigan or Michigan State in an approved NCAA football game | In-state participation is not itself a prohibition. Check the approved event and the sportsbook's available market. |
| A college player's statistical performance | Check the approved league and any specific restrictions. The general catalogue rule permits qualifying on-field outcomes verifiable by a box score or statistical analysis, unless otherwise prohibited. |
| Whether a player will be injured | Not permitted. The catalogue specifically identifies injury propositions as objectionable wagers. |
| The timing or number of fouls or penalty flags | Not permitted under the catalogue's examples of officiating-related propositions. |
In-play betting has an additional limit: the catalogue permits it for wager types explicitly approved on the relevant sport tabs. A pregame bet's eligibility does not establish permission to offer the same proposition after play starts.
Use the MGCB sports wagering catalogue page and its current spreadsheet to check a particular league or wager. The register and catalogue answer different questions: who may offer betting, and what betting may be offered.
How to check a Michigan betting site
- Find the operator in the MGCB register. Use the official authorized-provider page, not an advertisement claiming to serve Michigan.
- Follow the sports betting entry. Match the product, brand and destination. A casino-only listing is not a sportsbook licence.
- Check the event and wager. The MGCB catalogue distinguishes approved leagues, permitted bet types and restrictions.
- Read the house rules. Before wagering, understand settlement, cancellations and the complaint process. Keep a copy of the relevant rules and your bet receipt.
The MGCB also publishes legal versus illegal gaming guidance. Its enforcement announcements are useful warnings, but a site's absence from a cease-and-desist announcement does not prove it is licensed. Positive verification in the authorized register is the useful check.
When did Michigan legalize sports betting?
Michigan enacted its Lawful Sports Betting Act in 2019. Detroit's commercial casino sportsbooks began accepting wagers on 11 March 2020, and authorized online sports betting launched on 22 January 2021.
These dates describe different stages: legislation, retail opening and online launch. Articles asking when Michigan will launch online sportsbooks may therefore be describing an earlier period.
Complaints and self-exclusion
For an online sportsbook dispute, contact the operator or platform provider first. The MGCB's complaint page tells customers to allow the provider 10 business days to investigate. Keep the complaint number, messages, screenshots, bet receipt and applicable terms.
If the provider does not resolve the issue, use the MGCB internet gaming and sports betting complaint page. Explain both the original problem and what happened when you contacted the provider. The regulator's patron disputes page distinguishes internet, Detroit casino and tribal casino routes.
For exclusion, the MGCB's Responsible Gaming Database covers Michigan's regulated internet gaming and sports betting. The Disassociated Persons List is a separate program for Detroit's commercial casinos. An online exclusion and a Detroit casino exclusion are not interchangeable.
Check the MGCB responsible gaming page for current enrollment terms, duration and forms. Ask a tribal casino about its own exclusion process rather than assuming the state programs cover it. Customer service can also explain the account limits offered by a particular sportsbook.

Other sports products and common questions
Are FanDuel and DraftKings legal in Michigan?
Yes. FanDuel and DraftKings appear with sports betting links in the MGCB's authorized register checked for this guide. BetMGM is listed too. Customers must meet the online age, account and location requirements. A brand's authorization does not mean every service it offers is governed by the same licence.
Can nonresidents bet on sports in Michigan?
Yes, a visitor can meet Michigan's location requirement by being physically in the state when placing an online wager. The customer must also be at least 21 and satisfy the sportsbook's account requirements. Being registered with that brand elsewhere does not remove Michigan's checks.
Are fantasy contests and prediction contracts the same as sports betting?
No. They are separate products. A fantasy contest or prediction contract should not be treated as a Michigan-licensed sportsbook merely because its outcome involves a sporting event. Use the product-specific discussion in our Michigan gambling laws guide before assuming that sportsbook rules answer the question.
Does Michigan also allow online casino games?
Yes, Michigan separately authorizes online casino gaming through approved providers. Check the casino column in the MGCB register rather than assuming that a sportsbook licence covers it. Our US online casino legality guide explains how that differs across states.
